About
The verifiability of claims about objects is a matter of public interest. WITO's work on it helps protect consumers and public health, safeguard medicines and food, uphold environmental and climate integrity, support international cooperation, and make cross-border trade more trustworthy.
Purpose
WITO is established to pursue purposes of public utility, in conformity with the spirit, purposes, and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, in the field of digital trust for physical and digital objects. In particular it:
- develops and governs frameworks for the verification of trustworthy credentials concerning those objects;
- coordinates mutual recognition between digital trust frameworks operating across jurisdictions, sectors, and standards;
- contributes to the development of technical standards and supports the implementation of existing ones; and
- promotes knowledge of the work of the United Nations in adjacent fields.
Governance
Founding Membership
WITO is establishing its Founding Membership to establish the organisation's governance and procedures, three-year strategic plan, and key Board and General Assembly roles. Learn more about how you can join.
Structure
The General Assembly is WITO's supreme authority and comprises all members, each holding one vote. It adopts and amends the statutes, appoints and removes Board members and external auditors, approves the annual report and audited accounts, admits and excludes members, and decides on dissolution. It meets at least once a year.
The Board is the executive body. It manages WITO's affairs, administers its resources and accounts, and convenes the General Assembly. Board members are elected for two-year terms and serve on a voluntary basis. The Board may establish a secretariat and appoint a Director.
Technical committees, working groups, and advisory panels are implemented as needed. An advisory board is being established. To learn more about the governance of WITO, please see the statutes.
Constitution
WITO was constituted on 25 June 2026, at a general assembly of its Founding Members, as an association within the meaning of articles 60 et seq. of the Swiss Civil Code. Its seat is in the Canton of Geneva.
